Tom O’Meara was a senior media executive before establishing Tom O’Meara and Associates in 2008.
His final three postings before moving to consultancy were General Manager of the Courier in Ballarat, General Manager of the Canberra Times and CEO/GM of The Examiner, Launceston.
He started his media career with a cadetship at The Advocate in Burnie before joining The Examiner’s Hobart office in 1967. Senior reporting positions included state political and industrial roundsman, local government and sport.
In 1980, he was appointed Chief of Staff of The Examiner, a position he held for nine years when he became The Examiner’s inaugural North West manager in Devonport, during a period of intense newspaper competition.
Tom was appointed General Manager of the Courier in Ballarat in 1994 after its purchase by media company Rural Press, prior to the company’s purchase of Federal Capital Press in Canberra.
This precipitated Tom’s appointment in 1999 as General Manager FCP, publisher of The Canberra Times.
In 2002, Tom returned to Tasmania as CEO of The Examiner and Sunday Examiner.
Common to all appointments was the need to work closely with community, clients, and government at all levels.
Tom has continued his personal and professional involvement in the community through his roles as Chairman of the State Government’s Stronger Communities Taskforce, executive member of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust, board member of the Tasmanian Institute of Sport and former director of the Canberra Cultural Facilities Corporation, Tasracing, the Ballarat Chamber of Commerce and ACT Focus on Business committee.
